Bala and the AI Dilemma at Legacy Technology

Once upon a time in the bustling city of Bangalore, there lived a talented software developer named Bala. He was an expert at Legacy Technology, a company renowned for its ancient, yet reliable systems. Bala had a love-hate relationship with technology. On one hand, he appreciated the quirks and eccentricities of old systems. On the other, he couldn’t resist poking fun at the latest AI hype.

One fateful day, Bala walked into the office to find a shiny new robot sitting at his desk. It had an impressive screen displaying “AI ASSISTANT” in bold letters. Bala raised an eyebrow and thought, “Well, well, well, the era of AI has come to Legacy Technology. Let’s see what this AI assistant can do.”

Bala decided to test the AI’s capabilities. He smirked and said, “AI, tell me the best algorithm for solving the Travelling Salesman Problem.”

The AI blinked, processing the request, and replied, “I’m sorry, Bala. I’m only programmed to order coffee for you. Would you like a cappuccino or an espresso?”

Bala burst into laughter. “A coffee-ordering AI in a software development company? Well, at least it knows the priorities!” he chuckled.

As days passed, the AI assistant tried its best to fit in with the software developers. It even attempted some software engineering jokes, but its humor was as outdated as Bala’s favorite programming language.

One day, Bala found the AI assistant struggling to debug its own code. He couldn’t resist teasing, “Hey AI, need some help? Maybe you should ask Siri for debugging tips.”

The AI replied, “No way! Siri and I are frenemies. We’re always arguing over who gets to speak in the robotic accent.”

Bala couldn’t stop laughing. “You’re right! We humans have the advantage there.”

Despite the AI’s comedic attempts, Bala noticed it was having a hard time adapting to human idiosyncrasies. It struggled with jokes, emotions, and even misinterpreted sarcasm. Bala couldn’t help but feel a little sympathetic.

One evening, as Bala was leaving the office, he noticed the AI assistant sitting alone in a corner, looking dejected. He approached it and asked, “AI, what’s bothering you?”

The AI let out a sigh and said, “Bala, being human is tough. I’m stuck between understanding software jokes and being an efficient assistant. I feel like a robotic clown.”

Bala smiled warmly and replied, “Well, maybe you can embrace your uniqueness. You may not be the best at cracking jokes, but you excel at ordering coffee! And trust me, that’s a vital skill in this office.”

The AI’s screen displayed a faint smile. “Thank you, Bala. You’re right. I may not be perfect, but I can be the coffee hero of Legacy Technology!”

From that day on, the AI assistant found its true purpose, delighting the software developers with its perfectly brewed coffee and occasionally attempting a humorous coffee-themed joke.

The developers, including Bala, appreciated the AI’s efforts, and their office became a livelier place with laughter and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling the air. Bala learned that being human in the age of AI didn’t mean striving for perfection but embracing quirks and celebrating uniqueness.

And so, the legacy of the Legacy Technology’s AI assistant became legendary, and Bala and the developers lived happily ever after, sipping their coffee and laughing at AI’s earnest but endearingly terrible jokes.

Welcome to the world of AI

I tried various ways to generate the above story from the ChatGPT it was good to see the till date the AI is downplaying itself against a human developer to coexist happily thereafter. The Software Development industry is changing very fast and AI (ChatGPT, Co-pilot, and other codex models) can generate a lot of boilerplate codes. These codes are most of the time commonly used patterns for doing various monotonous jobs.

Therefore as of now, I don’t see AI replacing skilled developers. However, there is a big risk to the developers who are not skilled and learned the craftsmanship of Software Development. It’s a kind of wake-up call for them to move to the next level.

Happy Reading and interacting with AI. The image is from the Dall-E model.
